![]() Striking a match to find a gas leak is an almost invariably successful method of investigation. The Los Angeles Times documented countless damaging explosions caused by homeowners and workers dangerously using matches to discover seeping gas. This led to a huge increase in the number of small household leaks. As the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries progressed, more and more Angelenos used gas to heat their buildings and water, and to cook their food. Earthworks Most gas leaks were on a smaller, more domestic scale. This led to the discovery of the enormously rich Santa Fe Springs Oil Field. In 1907, a leak coming from an old water well in Southeast Los Angeles was investigated by geologists. ![]() In this region, rich with natural gas and oil, gas seeping from the ground occasionally pointed prospectors toward great wealth. The Los Angeles area has had a long and complicated history with gas leaks, both massive and tiny.
